Location and accessibility

Amber Hotel Bavor is situated at the confluence of the Volyňka and Otava rivers in the picturesque region of Southern Bohemia, a 10-minute walk from the centre of the town of Strakonice, near a Gothic castle from the second half of the 12th century. Strakonice is 100km away from Prague, located on the direct motorway route Prague – Passau. The way from the train and bus station takes 15 minutes.

Strakonice Castle

The Gothic Strakonice Castle, now site of the Museum of Central Otava Basin, was founded at the beginning of the 13th century at the confluence of the Otava and Volyňka rivers. One of the oldest parts of the castle is the Church of St. Prokop, which houses a very precious late Gothic folding altar from around 1250 and the so-called Madonna of Strakonice. The castle’s development is connected to the Bavor family, one of the foremost noble houses in Bohemia. Today, the castle is used exclusively for cultural purposes.

Blatná Water Castle

A Gothic water castle from the 15th century. It reached its heyday under the ownership of Lev of Rožmitál. An exposition on the castle, a family gallery, hunter’s parlour and the workshop of scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně can all be viewed at the castle.

Lomec u Vodňan

A very beautiful pilgrimage destination not far from the town of Vodňany. Here you will find a basilica which is a UNESCO monument and is tended to by the Order of the Grey Sisters.

Ruins of Helfenburg Castle

This expansive medieval castle from the mid-13th century once belonging to the Rožmberk dynasty has very interesting fortress architecture. Preserved parts of the Gothic palace and two guard towers can be seen here. The eastern tower has been modified to be an observation tower and offers visitors a beautiful view of the nature of the Šumava.
